Choose a start and finish time to see the elapsed hours and minutes. Earlier finish times are treated as the following day.
The calculator converts both clock times to minutes, carries overnight finishes into the next day, subtracts any unpaid break and converts the result back to hours and minutes.
For a same-day interval, subtract the start from the finish after converting both to minutes after midnight. For an overnight interval, treat the finish as occurring on the next day by adding 1,440 minutes. Subtract any unpaid break last.
| Example | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 09:20–17:05 | 1,025 − 560 | 465 min · 7 hr 45 min |
| 22:30–06:15 | (375 + 1,440) − 1,350 | 465 min · 7 hr 45 min |
| 07:00–19:00 less 45 min | 720 − 45 | 675 min · 11 hr 15 min |

Clock arithmetic assumes an ordinary 24-hour day. A shift spanning a daylight-saving change may be one hour shorter or longer in real elapsed time. Check the applicable timezone and official record.
A break cannot exceed the clock span. If several unpaid breaks apply, add their minutes together before entering the deduction.
This tool is best for one continuous interval. Use Work hours when several separate shifts or split duties need a combined total.
